Preparing biographies Born in Dundee, Scotland, known for its manufacture of hemp ropes for ships, Newall became a patent wire rope manufacturer in Durham. In the 1848 Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Practical Science at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, he showed a daguerreotype portrait, perhaps the medium to be expected given his expertise in metals. Surprisingly, Newall exhibited beside it a calotype portrait for comparison. This is the only known instance of Newall’s interest in photography. He went on to be a chemical manufacturer and a figure in society. Roger Taylor & Larry J.
