Emperor Napoleon III commissioned him to carry out a photographic survey of the city of New Orleans (Louisiana, USA) and exhibited the resulting images in the Paris World Exposition of 1867. This is one of the earliest photographic studies of an American urban center.

[3-9] *[Theodore Lilienthal] "Portrait and Landscape Photographer"; "Publishers" (& Co.); 121 Canal St.; 131 Poydras; "Stereoscopic Views of New Orleans and Vicinity" to #105 on RMs, fancy logo, and often used blind-stamp; wide variety of scy. & activities such as Firemen's Parade, funeral procession, Mardi Gras parade, Jockey club grounds; on RMs; won many medals for fine photog. such as bronze metal, Paris Expo 67. Listed as daguerrean, 57-62; partnership with Louis Lilienthal 66; worked alone 68-70; expanded into supplies, frames, etc., 70s and 80s. Imprint also seen as "& Co.".
