Amateur, India
Son of Thomas George and Augusta Glover of St Helen’s Place, London; baptised at St Helen’s, Bishopsgate, 23 May 1826; educated at Mr Pollard’s, Brompton, 1834-41, King’s College School, 1841-2, Addiscombe, 1842-4; entered Bengal Engineers and sailed for India on the Great Liverpool, 20 September 1845; 2nd Lieut, June 1844; Lieut, Nov 1849; Capt, Apr 1858; Lieut-Col, Jun 1866; Col, Jul 1870; retired, Jul 1870; Officiating Garrison Engineer, Lahore, c.1850; erected bridge at Salgram, 1855; Executive Engineer, Bhurtpore, Feb 1857; to Agra at outbreak of Mutiny and present at Battle of Agra, Jul 1857; Superintendent, W. Jumna Canals, Aug 1859, with rank of Executive Engineer; Superintending Engineer 1st Class, P.W.D., Mar 1867; acting Director of Telegraphs, 1866-7; author (with J.G. Medley) of Lectures delivered at the Thomason Civil Engineering College, Roorkee (Roorkee, 1865); after retirement was director of several telegraph companies and visited Australia in connection with building of duplicate cable; son-in-law of General Sir Charles Herbert and brother-in-law of Colvin Auckland, Controller-General of Egyptian Finance. He produced a series of portraits of Indian Mutiny veterans in early 1860s. His photographs of the Ganges Canal were published in his book The Ganges Canal illustrated by photographs taken by T.G. Glover (Roorkee, 1867[Gernsheim says 1st edition in 1864]).
