Vernon John Roufs was born on May 22, 1908, in Minneapolis, and spent his entire career at the company that issued Deluxe checks. He began there in about 1926 and over the next forty-five years did work designing, photographing, and printing. He retired in 1970 as the superintendent of lithography.
Roufs joined the Minneapolis Camera Club in 1943. He also became a member of the Gopher Camera Club and the Minneapolis Color Photo Club. In 1938, the Minneapolis Salon of Photography accepted one of his monochrome prints. He then became interested in color work, showing four slides in both the 1948 and 1949 salon. His wife, Irene, also showed slides in 1949. In 1953, now living in St. Paul, he judged the slides for the 21st Minneapolis International Salon of Photography and Color Exhibition, presented at the American Swedish Institute.
His work was exhibited at other Twin Cities and national venues around 1940. Among these were the Kodak building at the New York World’s Fair, Minneapolis Public Library, Minnesota State Fair, Blackhawk Camera Club (Davenport, Iowa), Greeley Camera Club (Greeley, Iowa) and the Tri-City Federation of Camera Clubs, of Davenport (Iowa), Moline (Illinois), and Rock Island (Illinois). The American Annual of Photography included him in its listing of "Who’s Who in Color Photography," indicating that four salons accepted twelve of his pieces during the 1946-47 exhibition season. The photograph owned by the museum is a simple still life of four apples nestled in a straw hat, creating pleasing textures and circular forms. Vernon J. Roufs died on December 7, 2004, in Excelsior, a suburb of Minneapolis.
