After studying at Eton and Oxford University he returned to Africa in 1930 and commenced his travels within Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Of his many travel books "Arabian Sands" (1959) and "The Marsh Arabs" (1964) have remained classics. During his travels he took a large number of photographs and almost 40,000 are held by the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford.Preparing biographies
