Dates: | 1917, 3 December - 2012 | Born: | Poland, Zywiec | Died: | Poland, Zywiec | Active: | Poland | Polish photographer who was arrested in 1940 for trying to leave German-occupied Poland. He was sent to KL Auschwitz-Birkenau where his photographic skills were used by the SS and the camp authorities to document the prisoners. Because of his photographic skills he was kept alive and he witnessed and documented the horrors of a Death Camp. The emotional scars left by those he photographed prevented him from returning to photography after the war. A 52-minute Polish documentary film "The Portraitist" (Portrecista, Poland, 2005) was made about his life and work directed by Irek Dobrowolski, and it was shown on Polish TV in 2006.Preparing biographies
