[4-0] *"Photographer for Wheeler Survey, 72"; 1200 Chestnut St. Important & long-standing US photog., best known for his work with George Wheeler's "Expedition of 1872", output broken down into several series; also issued "American Scenery". Started as daguerreotypist working with James E. McClees & John Keenan, 48; exhibited American Manufactures Institute in 51; opened his own dag. gallery, 52; moved to Washington, DC & was Chief Photographer at the Army Medical Museum, 65-69; returned to Phila. & purchased James McClees studio, 69; gave William H. Rau his first job in 73 as an assistant photog., later became partner, 70s. From 85 on was associated with George Barrie & Co. in photo. publishing.
