A collection of over 300 Civil War photographs. The vast majority were taken by Barnard, General Sherman's official photographer, beginning in 1864. Barnard concentrated on the inanimate: buildings, railroad trestles, tracks, engines, and nature vistas. But almost every picture testifies to his artistry. The photos are enhanced by excellent captions and an equally informative text. Many of the captured and army-built structures are also depicted in detailed architectural drawings that were commissioned by the quartermaster corps. The book will have limited appeal, but regional Civil War buffs and students of early photography or 19th-century architecture will find it a treasure. Thomas E. Schott, Office of History, Engineering Installation Div., Tinker Air Force Base, Okla.
