Wealthy landowner with eclectic interests including life-saving boats, horses, bulls and a profound interest in photography. His immense fortune allowed him time and resources to support his photographic work which he claimed was that of an amateur. His legacy is preserved at the House - Studio - Carlos Relvas in his home town of Golegã in Portugal which is one of the largest and best preserved nineteenth century photographic studios.
