Artist statement:

My images are made with a digital camera, but the approach is based on traditional principles of photography. I do not manipulate the image in any way, rather edit through the camera, full frame and not cropped. The images are composed through the lens at the moment of the capture. Longer exposures provide richer detail and texture. The images are printed with archival ink (through inkjet) on archival watercolor paper.

Old master portraits and self-portraits inspire me in context and form. As a photographer, I hope to make suggestions about the sitter by allowing the viewer ways of seeing the familiar on new terms. The subject’s physical appearance, their vulnerabilities, their self-identities, their individual otherness, are what I hope to reveal in contrast to preexisting, imposed definitions. Poetic, visual and spontaneous unspoken truths are captured through the medium; this is most especially true for my portrait work. I am keenly interested in a visual language of revealing and subverting identity; using the familiar in unfamiliar ways, disorienting the viewer and playing with the notion of identity.
