Oppenheim was one of the first German photographers to work with the calotype process. He learned the process with Gustave Le Gray and already used it in 1852 while in Spain. One year later he photographed the Acropolis and as of 1854 he worked in southern Germany. Oppenheim's photographic oeuvre is very small and only a few photographs have survived.
