Auguste Salzmann
1854 (taken) 1856 (printed, before)
The Holy Sepulchre, Details of the Door, Jerusalem

Salted paper print, Imprimerie photographique Blanquart-Evrard
32.4 x 23.3 cm

National Gallery of Canada / Musée des beaux-arts du Canada
No. 32809

Curatorial description (Accessed: 3 December 2015)
Because his photographs were produced with the intention of proving certain scholarly arguments, Salzmann concentrated on revealing details and fragments of many of the monuments upon which he trained his camera. It is a close-up view of the sculptural detail that decorates the doorways and column at the Holy Sepulchre. The medium of the albumenized salted paper print , with its rich tonalities, sharp detail and ability to suggest the dramatic potential of light and shadow, provides us with a wonderful study of texture and pattern in this print.
