(Wilfried Vandevelde, 21 December 2025) Jean-Baptiste Joseph Liagre, born in Tournai on 18 February 1815 and died in Ixelles on 13 January 1891, was a Belgian soldier and Minister of War. Liagre pursued an academic career at the Royal Military Academy. He specialized in probability theory and error theory, which he applied to the development of a Belgian geodetic network. In 1869, he became Commandant of the Royal Military Academy. In 1874, he was promoted to general. In 1879, he became Minister of War.
