The poor little boy died at about two this morning. Mrs. Bartrum called me at about half-past one. She seemed much terrified by the change in him, scarcely knowing what it was. I, however, knew only too well. But she was very good, and I persuaded her to keep quite quiet, so as not to disturb the dear little child in his last moments; and he died in her arms, without much previous suffering, except from difficulty of breathing. I washed and
dressed him, and laid him upon her bed, and in the morning we gathered roses and other flowers from the garden to lay around him. He had his picture taken as he lay (with buds of orange blossom upon his pillow, and such a sweet smile on his face), by a daguerreotypist, in the middle of the day. The portrait was most successful; the poor little thing lay with its head a little on one side, and he look* as if he were smiling in sleep. The portrait was slightly tinted, to take off the pallor of the effect.
