Richard Drew 2001, 11 September Falling Man Various sizes
Source requested A man falls from the north tower of New York's World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, after terrorists crashed two hijacked airliners into the WTC twin towers. In the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks, this photograph provoked feelings of anger. It ran only once in many American newspapers after they received irate letters from readers who felt the image was disrespectful, manipulative, and voyeuristic. This led to the media's self-censorship of the photograph, preferring to print photographs of acts of sacrifice and valor. Drew had this to say: "This is how it affected people's lives at that time, and I think that is why it's an important picture. I didn't capture this person's death. I captured part of his life. This is what he decided to do, and I think I preserved that."
