Genthe's autobiography As I Remember, published in 1936 was reprinted at least twice. Defining "the concept of 'Photographic Mask'", Genthe sought to go beyond the "surface record" or "commonplace record of clothes and a photographic mask", in an attempt to capture with the camera more of a human being's essence.
