Photograph of the Fort of Ali Masjid taken from the river. A man wearing a turban is standing in the river facing the camera. Two men stand in the water to the far left and another man is standing on a rock to the right. There are steep rocky mountains to either side of the river. The Fort of Ali Masjid is at the top of the mountain in the distance. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict.
