He fought in many military campaigns which led to the formation of a unified Italy. He was known as the "Hero of Two Worlds" in tribute to his military enterprises in South America and Europe. Considered a National hero and was admired by the likes of Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas and many intellectuals of his time.
