Hans Finsler was born in Heilbronn. He later studied architecture in Stuttgart and Munich, and art history in Munich, Berlin and Halle. In 1922, he took a teaching post at the Burg Giebichenstein Kunstgewerbeschule, near Halle, where he ran an influential photography class. Among his students was Heinrich Koch whose estate this print is from. He returned to Zurich in 1932. In 1929 he took part in the Film und Foto exhibition in Stuttgart, showing 37 of his photographs.
