Photograph of the Redan fortress, looking towards the Great Ravine. The walls of the fortress are reinforced with sandbags and wicker fencing and the ground is covered with debris. The Great Ravine can be seen in the distance. After an eleven month siege the city of Sevastopol was captured by the allied British, French and Turkish forces on 8th September 1855. Lefevre photographed a number of strategic fortresses shortly after they had been abandoned by the Russians.
