Portrait of Daguerre (detail)

Daguerreotype, detail
Musée Carnavalet
Inventory no: PH172

His hair has turned mostly gray and he has the look of as man well into middle age. He was 55 years old when this image was taken. He would be dead in another seven years.

He had already retired to Bry-sur- Marne and though assuming the pose of a self assured gentleman, his face seems to project a different sentiment.

This illustration was included in the lecture "The many faces of Daguerre" presented by Matt Isenburg at the Daguerreian Society Symposium (2009).
