Reaksmei Thma Romeal is an area in close proximity to the K5 mine belt where clearance began in 2007 and continued through 2017 encompassing a total of 46 separate minefields which have all now been cleared. In addition to mine clearance, HALO also conducted Mine Risk Education briefings on the threat posed by explosive remnants of war and ways to avoid, or alert others to their whereabouts. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) is a HALO team that responds to found explosive items that we safely remove and detonate in a controlled demolition site.
The HALO Trust is the world's largest humanitarian mine clearance organisation. We save lives and restore communities threatened by landmines and other weapons of war, such as cluster bombs, stockpiles of small arms and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Born out of a desire to help the people of Afghanistan in 1988, we now have over 7,500 staff in 19 countries and territories, working to get vulnerable communities back on their feet following conflict. Millions of families have been able to return to their homes safely thanks to this work, but there is still much to do.
HALO was the first organization to respond to Cambodia's landmine problem in 1991. We have over 1,000 national staff working in the provinces of Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Otdar Meanchey, Siem Reap, Pursat and Pailin. To date, HALO alongside other international operators and the national capacity CMAC, have cleared over 50% of Cambodia's minefields. We recruit and train female and male deminers from the mine-affected districts so that the landmine contaminated communities are part of the clearance process as well as ensuring donor funding, in the form of salaries, reaches some of the most marginalised communities in Cambodia.
