View of ruined building cast in shadow on southern side of Sphinx, Giza, Cairo, with desert beyond. Local men lying and sitting on monumental stones. The Prince of Wales and his party visited Giza on 4 March. On camels, they visited the pyramids and the Spinx which he described as 'curious and interesting' (Journal of a visit to the Middle East, 1862). The photographer Francis Bedford described this as a 'recently excavated' temple on the southern side of the Sphinx. The photograph is signed, captioned and dated in the negative, 'F Bedford Ghizeh'. The number in the Day & Son series is 15.
