Unidentified photographer n.d. Silhouette of a woman
Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate Private collection of Jack and Beverly Wilgus (Beverly Wilgus, 21 July 2021) We collect cut silhouettes as part of our pre-photography collection but also like photographs of silhouette as well. It is not always easy to tell the original cut from the photographs but I will try to post only the rephotographed examples in our collection. This 1/6 plate daguerreotype is a copy of an earlier silhouette portrait of a woman. It is interesting to us as a bridge from the pre-photography portrait making process of the silhouette to the daguerreotype process that was introduced in 1839. It came to us in a standard case but we had it rehoused in this period frame so it could hang in our pre-photography display.
