On May 23, 1928 Umberto Nobile embarked on his second expedtion to the North Pole by airship without Amundsen which was followed worldwide. On May 25, with its 60 crew members, the Italia crashed near the island Spitzbergen. Following an SOS call from the crew an international rescue team was formed. Due to the high risk of the flight and various misunderstandings Nobile was not honored in his homeland Italy. Between 1939 - 1943 he went to the USA where he taught at the Lewis Holy Name School of Aeronautics in Lockport, Illinois. It was not until 1945 when he was rehabilitated in Italy.
