Photograph of Chinemitze Chief of the Nlaka'pamux or Thompson River Salish in a head and shoulders length portrait in left side profile. He wears a jacket and checked shirt.

The Thompson River flows through the southern and central section of British Columbia and is formed of two subsidiaries that comprise the South Thompson River and the North Thompson River. The oldest dated human artefacts have been found in the vicinity of the South Thompson River. The river was named after David Thompson (1770-1857), the British surveyor, who carried out extensive surveys in North America.
