Sir Joseph NoÙl Paton (1821-1901)
Carte de visite
Paul FreckerPaul Frecker provides the following comments:
"Paton was a Scottish painter of allegorical, historical, mythological and biblical subjects. He was sympathetic to the aims of the Pre-Raphaelites, and became a friend of Millais. A man of culture and intellect with a wide range of interests, he was appointed Her Majesty's Limner for Scotland and was knighted in 1866."
"Sir Joseph Paton was a tall and very fine-looking man; he received us with a stately courtesy, in which some degree of shyness seemed to be lurking. He expressed himself with much modesty in respect to his own performances, with warm recognition of those of Madox Brown. He had a handsome, well-kept house, comprising a very noticeable collection of armour" [William Michael Rosetti, Some Reminiscences, 1906].
The carte has been inscribed and signed in ink by the sitter recto in the lower margin: To "Jack" Reid from his old friend / NoÙl Paton.
