Daguerreotype, vinetted Archive Farms Notes: In 1849 Whipple patented a new method of taking portraits, which he called the "crayon daguerreotype" because it imitated the effect of hand drawn portrait heads. It was a method for obtaining a vignette by holding a card with an oval opening in front of the camera lens during the exposure and moving it slightly to blur the edges of the image. Daguerreotypes by Whipple taken in this style sometime have mats bearing the stamp "Whipple's Patent".
