Hans Hildenbrand 1916 (ca) No. 328, Series 52, Sprengtrichter in der Champagne (Crater in the Champagne Region.)
Stereo lithograph, based on an Autochrome Private collection of Ralph Reiley (Ralph Reiley, May 2025) The chalky soil was very easy to dig trenches in. It was also easy to dig tunnels under the enemy lines. The tunnels would be filled with explosives and set off prior to an attack, leaving large craters that were turned into fortified positions.
