It is not certain who took the portraits that Hurd, presumably, brought together in this photomontage. The photograph of Garfield's mother, Eliza Ballou Garfield (1801-1888), at the top right is attributed to James Fitzallen Ryder (1826-1904) and there are copies of cabinet cards with the same photograph of a reproduction in Harvard University Library (Object numbers: 119.1976.4242, 119.1976.4243).
