Portrait of a fashionable young woman holding an image case

Daguerreotype, 1/4 plate
Capitol Gallery
Courtesy of Capitol Gallery (Spring 2007 Auction, #33)

Curious quarter-plate daguerreotype of a fashionable young woman holding the exact same image case that houses her image. Unfortunately this piece has a number of rubs and scratches from past abuse. However, this image offers an historical reference because of an interesting hand written description on the back of the plate that is accompanied by a similar fountain pen inscription behind the daguerreotype. The back of the plate reads, Likeness of Miss Sarah McReynolds, Canal Dover, Ohio, taken July 22, (appears to be 49) by Prof. Wade in 7 seconds. The pen inscription reads 10th seconds and we feel this was an error. Oddly enough we have seen another portrait of a man identified as Mr. Baltzly with this same inscription. Craig's Registry has no reference for a daguerreotypist named Wade in Ohio so we assume he was an amateur experimenting with the daguerreian process.
