Cabinet card Private collection of John Quin (John Quin) I found this one in a collection of photographs and didn't pay too much attention to it being a picture of a craved bust even though it had the imprint of prominent photographer William Kurtz.
Things changed when I saw the inscription on the reverse.
The bust is of distinguished Civil War veteran and chief engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge Washington Augustus Roebling.
The note on the reverse says" William H Paine Esq: with compliments of Alo Loeher "
The sculpture is by Aloys Loeher who produced several major public works and exhibited at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition.
William H Paine was another distinguished Civil War veteran, cartographer and engineer who was hired by friend W A Roebling as assistant engineer on the Brooklyn Bridge. He went on to build several major engineering projects in New York.
