Henry Fox Talbot
1844
Tomb of Sir Walter Scott, Dryburgh Abbey, Scotland
[Sun Pictures in Scotland]

Salt print, from calotype negative
Ashbee-Gray-Lambert-Collection

"The plates of the present work are impressed by the agency of Light alone, without any aid whatsoever from the artist's pencil. They are the sun-pictures themselves, and not, as some persons have imagined, engravings in imitation" William Henry Fox Talbot 1845

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) had been dead only twelve years - and the tomb was already a place of pilgrimage his many fans - when Talbot took this picture in the fading autumn evening light. (John Hannavy, 2008)

This photograph was included in the book by John Hannavy "Great Photographic Journeys - in the footsteps of Pioneer British Photographers" (Dewi Lewis Publishing, 2008 - # ISBN-10: 1904587542, # ISBN-13: 978-1904587545)
