No. 335, Series 53, Shützengraben im Westen (Trenches on the Western Front.)

Stereo lithograph, based on an Autochrome
Private collection of Ralph Reiley
(Ralph Reiley, May 2025) A very tidy looking trench, and well behind the front lines. Note the soldier in the foreground. The canvas pouch on his belt is the early gas mask holder. It was found to be unsuitable for front line use, as it did not protect the gas mask from mud. A metal gas mask can with a tight-fitting lid was introduced that offered better protection to the gas mask.
