By the 19th June, the reconnaissance party reached Tingri on the Tibetan plateau. Described as being barren and arid, Tingri was in stark contrast to the lush valley of the Chumbi through which the expedition had just passed. Base camp was established here for a month. This was where Mallory and Bullock would set off 4 days later on the 23rd June on their journey to find out if the North face of Everest offered a feasible way to the summit.
