Photograph of Attock Fort, looking towards Peshawar. The fort is on a hillside to the left with the Indus River beside it to the right. Boats are moored alongside the pontoon bridge that spans the river. There is a road in the foreground, on which there are carts drawn by cattle, donkeys and people. A small town can be seen in the distance with hills beyond. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict.
