Photograph of the machinery used to hoist and wash diamond soil at a mine in Griqualand-West. To the left there are wooden hoists lining the edge of the pit. To the right there are large wooden wheels supported by frames, which are pulling up the cables from the hoists. There is a hut and a number of workers in the space between the two sets of machinery. Griqualand-West was a British colony in southern Africa. The discovery of diamonds in the area led to vast excavation sites and the mass immigration of workers.
