Photograph of a military camp on Shagai Heights, a plateau at the edge of the Khyber Pass. In the foreground there is a small group of tents with kit piled outside and soldiers standing and sitting in small groups around them. More tents are spread over an area of open land behind with a group of camels at the centre. The Fort of Ali Masjid is in the distance to the far left. There are mountains behind. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict.
