"A cabinet print showing a woman in fancy dress, dressed as an early eighteenth century highwayman. The fragmentary nature of photography, the way it simultaneously conceals and reveals, is emphasized by the sitter's mask. The lady is retiring behind her disguise, while fixer the viewer with an inquisitive eye, turning the voyeurism of photography back on the observer."
