Photograph of the Khurd Khyber Pass. A rough path is cut into a steep rocky mountainside. At the top of the mountain there is a small stone building with soldiers holding guns standing nearby. A group of mounted soldiers are gathered at the bottom of the pass to the far right. Mountains extend into the distance beyond the pass to the right. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
