Sculptor Mario Joseph Korbel (1882-1954) was born in Czechoslovakia and at age 18, came to the United States (1900), where he eventually settled in Chicago. He spent five years in the U. S., then returned to Europe, studying in Berlin at the Royal Academy, Munich then at the Academie Julian, Paris. He returned to Chicago in 1909 and four years later moved to New York City. Korbel worked in the classical tradition, usually in bronze and often experimenting with new patinas and textures. His works commonly depicted idealized female nudes, often dancers - and he eventually married one. Korbel was member of the Czechoslovak Club of New York and Chicago; the National Sculpture Society New York chapter; and Architectural League, New York. He died on March 31, 1954 in New York.
