Photograph of the edge of the Kimberley Mine. There are tram lines to the right of the steep mine pit that extend into the distance. A small group of men are sitting at the edge of the tram line. There is heavy machinery lining the far edge of the mine, used to haul up excavated material. The Kimberley Mine was a major diamond excavation site in Griqualand-West, a British colony in southern Africa. A large town was established nearby to accommodate the mass immigration of workers.
