Private collection of Richard W. Gadd (Alan Griffiths, 31 July 2020) The statue of Empress Josephine, first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, was installed in 1859 and decapitated in 1991. The decapitation and addition of red paint to the statue was because of her role in the reintroduction of slavery to Martinique.
