Jean Chaffanjon
1886-1887 (ca)
Along the Orinoco River, Venezuelan Amazon (Sur l'Orénoque)

Albumen print
Snite Museum of Art
This photograph was taken during a late 19th-century French expedition in the Venezuelan Amazon, led by explorer anthropologist Jean Chaffanjon (1854-1913).

Jean Chaffanjon published his book L'Orénoque et le Caura: relation de voyages exécutés en 1886 et 1887 (Paris, 1889) and it was very popular in France. Jules Verne's 45th volume of the 54 Extraordinary Voyages series is entitled "Superb Orénoque" and is based upon the work of Chaffanjon.
