Thomas Norman 1885 (ca) Family portrait (Back) - Showing backmark of Thomas Norman
Tintype, carte de visite size Private collection of Steven Evans What makes this very fine tintype of this well to do young family particularly unique is not visible at first glance. Well lit, with fine tones and clarity, the carefully composed image is easy to view and the applied colour adds dimension and interest without being distracting. Now, turn the tintype around for a view of the back and you will find the gold stamped moniker of the maker of this well-preserved plate. Unlike so many makers of tintypes in the 19th century, this operator made a dignified attempt at immortality by stamping the back of the plate with his name in a simulated medieval font. Ironically, we have been unable so far to determine who Thomas Norman was or where he operated his studio. So much for immortality!
