Working on his photo books about Vienna, Hubmann found visual formulas for the city's myths, narratives and attributes, for example in fading relics of its imperial history or morbid overtones of Gemütlichkeit (cosiness) and wine bliss. With his legendary Hawelka photo essay, he set up a lasting monument to the coffee house as a Viennese institution that offered a semi-public home to the narrow circles of cultural life.
