Photograph of Afridi tribesmen, a Pashtun tribe who occupied the area around the Khyber Pass. A large group of men are gathered on a rocky ledge, some standing and others sitting. They are wearing loose robes and turbans and are holding jezails, long and heavy Afghan guns. There are mountains behind them in the distance. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. In addition to photographing landscapes and key strategic sites he captured prominent Afghan families and tribes.
