Album page
J. Paul Getty Museum
ID/Accession Number: 88.R.17, Volume 1, Page 143

Two albums contain an extensive handwritten journal, profusely illustrated with photographs, made to record a four month European tour made by Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Peabody, accompanied by his sister, Elizabeth. The journal entries date from their departure from New York on November 18, 1874 to April 2, 1875, the day before their return sailing to the United States, and primarily record their visits to the museums, churches, and other cultural monuments that were the focus of their trip. The journal also provides an account of their daily life, mentioning social contacts, concert and theater performances they attended, shopping expeditions, descriptions of travel between cities, and regular weather reports.
