Photograph of the hill on which the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot were defeated during the 1842 retreat from Kabul. The incident took place during the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839-42). Four Afghan men wearing loose robes and turbans are arranged in a row on the hillside in the foreground. The man to the far left is holding a long gun over his shoulder. There is a valley below them to the right and mountains extend into the distance behind. This photograph was taken by John Burke, who travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80).
