When he took this photograph Leopold Ahrendts was standing next to the Neue Wache and the Bülow statue which figures prominently in the left side of the image. At the center of the image is the impressive dome of the Castle (built 1845 - 1853) and to the right is the Kronprinzenpalais still before its reconstruction in 1856-57.
